As news hit this afternoon of the passing of music legend, Prince, I struggled to find the words.
What do you say?
I felt the same way when the text came through the Michael Jackson had passed and Whitney Houston and Amy Winehouse and Robin Williams. The list goes on and on. I can remember all the way back to 18 years ago when I woke up to hear that Frank Sinatra had died.
Beyond greatness and abundant talent, these musicians have one other thing in common. At some point in time, I said to my husband, “the next time “artist” comes to town, we have got to go to the concert.” I was fortunate enough to see Whitney Houston perform live several years ago. Beyond that, my good intentions became regrets as I missed out on the magical opportunity see greatness LIVE.
I’ve seen some incredible concerts including U2, Luciano Pavarotti, Celine Dion, Bruno Mars, Michael Buble, Chris Botti, Kiss and so many other talented performers. I regret not buying that ticket to see Michael Jackson, Frank Sinatra and now Prince. We are so fortunate to live in a time of technology where we can watch a hologram performance that is ALMOST like the real thing and a time of media availability that makes it possible to watch just about any concert on YouTube. We are fortunate but that’s living vicariously through someone else. I want to live in my moment.
I must start seizing the concert! No more excuses of being too busy to enjoy the art of music. When someone great is close by – I’ve got to make the effort to show up and show out. Just as we aren’t promised tomorrow, neither are our heroes and legends. Honor them while they are living rather than regretting not doing so once they are gone.
Keep the music alive…
